Volume 3, 2008, issue 2

This special issue of 21st Century Society arises from a transdisciplinary conference on the social future held at Cardiff University. The complexity of the subject-matter was organised into three streams, focused, respectively, on how the future is known, created and minded.
From a conventional perspective associated with the industrial way of life, the future is the ‘not yet’. It is the realm of potential and possibility, an empty vessel to be filled with dreams and desires, plans and projects. As such, it is a difficult domain for social science inquiry.
